Frequently Asked Questions

What is an IP address?

An IP address (Internet Protocol Address) is a unique numerical label assigned to devices connected to the internet. It enables data transmission between devices on the network.

What's the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?

IPv4 uses a 32-bit address format (e.g., 192.168.1.1) with about 4.3 billion available addresses. IPv6 uses a 128-bit address format (e.g., 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334) with virtually unlimited addresses.

How accurate is the location information?

IP-based location information is typically accurate to the city level. It cannot pinpoint exact addresses or buildings. If using VPN or proxy, the displayed location will differ from your actual location.

Can I hide my IP address?

Yes, you can hide your actual IP address using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) or proxy server. These services will display an IP address from a different location.

What is a public (global) IP address?

A public IP address is the address visible on the internet. It is assigned by your ISP and is used to route traffic between your network and external services.

What is a private IP address?

A private IP address is used inside your local network (e.g., 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, 172.16–172.31.x.x). It is not directly reachable from the public internet.

Why does my IP address change?

Many ISPs assign dynamic IP addresses that can change when your router reconnects or after a lease expires. VPNs and mobile networks can also cause frequent changes.

What's the difference between a static IP and a dynamic IP?

A static IP stays the same, while a dynamic IP can change over time. Static IPs are often used for servers or remote access and may cost extra from your ISP.

Can an IP address reveal my exact home address?

No. IP geolocation is usually accurate to the city or region level and cannot reliably identify an exact street address or apartment.

Why does my VPN location not change?

Your VPN may not be connected, or your browser/app may be using cached DNS, WebRTC, or location services. Try reconnecting, clearing DNS cache, or switching VPN servers.

What is DNS and how does it relate to IP addresses?

DNS translates domain names (like example.com) into IP addresses. When you run a domain lookup, you're essentially querying DNS records for that domain.

What are A and AAAA records?

An A record maps a domain to an IPv4 address. An AAAA record maps a domain to an IPv6 address.

What is ASN (AS number)?

ASN identifies the network (Autonomous System) that an IP address belongs to. It helps indicate which ISP/organization is routing that traffic on the internet.

Why do I see multiple IP addresses for one domain?

A domain can resolve to multiple IPs for load balancing, redundancy, or CDNs. DNS may return different IPs depending on your location and resolver.

Why is IPv6 missing or not shown?

Your ISP or network may not support IPv6, or it may be disabled on your device/router. Some networks provide only IPv4 or use IPv6 in limited configurations.

What is CGNAT and how does it affect my IP?

CGNAT means multiple users share a single public IPv4 address. It can complicate inbound connections (port forwarding) and make your public IPv4 different from your router's private IP.
